Introduction
Royal Roads University partnered with the First Nations Technology Council to bring the Foundations in Innovation and Technology (FiiT) program online, expanding its digital delivery to Indigenous learners and communities across British Columbia.
Approach
As part of the instructional-design team, I wireframed a clear, user-friendly Moodle learning environment and produced practical video tutorials to support the transition from paper-based materials to online learning.
Overview
The inception of FiiT Online was designed to extend the reach of the FiiT program, offering Indigenous students throughout British Columbia a chance to gain crucial digital skills for success in the burgeoning technology and innovation sector. The goal was to make this invaluable resource accessible to those unable to participate in on-site classes.
The Challenge
Shifting to an online format brought its own set of challenges, notably the need to create digital materials that were not only engaging and accessible but also effective for learners in remote settings. A significant hurdle was designing an LMS interface that catered to students with diverse levels of digital literacy, ensuring no one was left behind.
The Strategy
To navigate these obstacles, I devised a strategy centered around the production of high-quality, interactive video tutorials tailored to various learning preferences. My wireframing skills were instrumental in creating a Moodle LMS interface that was visually appealing and easy to navigate, providing a frictionless learning experience for every student.
Results
The fruits of our labor were immediately evident. The video tutorials I developed are still being used today, six years later, underscoring their quality and enduring relevance. The user-friendly design of the Moodle LMS has fostered an engaging and productive learning environment, significantly contributing to the program’s success. Thanks to FiiT Online, we’ve managed to extend the program’s reach, enabling a greater number of Indigenous students to build the digital skills they need.
Conclusion
My involvement in the FiiT Online project has had a lasting impact on the accessibility and efficacy of digital skills education for Indigenous communities in British Columbia. By embracing innovative approaches to online learning and committing to educational excellence, I’ve helped pave the way for Indigenous innovators to excel in the digital age. This case study is a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and innovation in breaking down educational barriers and empowering communities through technology.
